You search for your own business on Google Maps and it isn't there. Or it shows when you type its name, but not when you search for what you do, in the town you do it. These are two different problems with different fixes, so the first job is working out which one you have. Here are the checks in the order we'd run them, with Google's own rules for each.

The short answer
  • Only verified profiles show on Maps and Search. Check verification first.
  • New profiles can take up to a month to start ranking after verification.
  • A suspended or disabled profile won't show to anyone until it's resolved.
  • If it shows for your name but not your service, it's a ranking problem: relevance, distance and prominence.
  • There's no way to pay Google for a better local ranking. The fix is the profile, your site and your reviews.

Is the profile verified?

Google is blunt about this: only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile and look for a prompt to verify. Verification can be a video, a phone or email code, or a postcard, depending on what Google offers you. Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days, most postcard codes arrive within 14 days, and codes expire after 30 days, so use one as soon as it comes.

Is it new?

Even after verification, a new profile doesn't rank straight away. Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results. If your profile was verified last week, search for the exact business name; if it shows for that, give it a few weeks before worrying about the rest.

Has it been suspended?

If a profile breaks Google's guidelines, it's suspended or disabled and won't show to other users on Google until you resolve the issue. Common causes are an address Google doesn't accept, extra words in the business name, or a duplicate profile. Our guide to a suspended Google Business Profile covers how to find the cause and use the one appeal Google allows.

It shows for your name. Why not your service?

This is the most common version, and it means the profile is fine but ranks below others. Google's local ranking help names three things it weighs:

How Google ranks local results
  • Relevance. How well the profile matches the search. Complete, accurate details help Google match you to the right searches.
  • Distance. How far each business is from the person searching. You can't change this, but pages on your site for each area you serve help you show up beyond your doorstep.
  • Prominence. How well-known the business is. Google says this includes how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help.

Relevance is the one most owners can fix this week. Check the primary category: Google asks you to choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business, and not to select a category for every product or service. Fill in services, hours, photos and a description that says what you do and where. Then make sure your website has a page for each main service, since the profile and the site support each other.

If you go to your customers

Service-area businesses, such as plumbers, cleaners and mobile beauty, follow their own rules. Google says you can set up to 20 service areas, that the overall area shouldn't be more than about 2 hours of driving time from your base, and that you can't set it as a radius. A service-area business can only have one profile for the whole area it serves, with the address hidden. Listing a town as a service area doesn't guarantee you'll rank there: distance still counts, which is where area pages on your site earn their keep.

A ten-minute check

1

Search the exact business name on Google Maps

If nothing shows, the problem is verification, newness or a suspension. If it shows, the problem is ranking.

2

Open the profile while signed in

Look for a verification prompt, a suspension notice or edits waiting for review.

3

Check the name and address

Your real-world name, no extra keywords, and an address Google accepts, or a hidden address if you go to customers.

4

Check the primary category

The one that best describes your core business, not a long list.

5

Fill the gaps

Services, hours, photos and a description. Complete profiles are more likely to show.

6

Start asking for reviews

Every customer, every time, with a direct link. Never offer anything in exchange.

What not to do

Avoid
  • Creating a second profile because the first won't show. Duplicates break the guidelines and can get both suspended.
  • Adding keywords or town names to the business name. It can lead to a suspension.
  • Using a virtual office or someone else's address to appear in another town.
  • Paying anyone who promises a guaranteed Maps ranking. Google says there's no way to pay for one.
  • Buying reviews. Google's policy bans incentives, and fake reviews bring their own penalties.

Questions people ask

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?

The most common reasons are that the profile isn't verified, it's new, it's been suspended, or it is showing but ranks below other businesses for the search you tried. Google says only verified businesses can show their information on Maps and Search, and rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear.

Why does my business show when I search its name but not my service?

Then the profile exists and is visible, and the problem is ranking. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence: how well the profile matches the search, how far you are from the searcher, and how well-known the business is, including links and reviews.

How long does it take for a new profile to show on Maps?

After verification, Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results. Verification reviews can take up to 5 business days, and a postcard code usually arrives within 14 days.

I changed my details and now the profile is missing. Why?

Google says edits can take up to 3 days to appear, and service area edits up to 48 hours if approved. If the profile is missing longer than that, check for a suspension notice.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?

No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear alongside local results, but the unpaid ranking comes from the profile, your site and your reviews.

Should I create a new profile if mine won't show?

No. A second profile for the same business breaks Google's guidelines and can get both suspended. Fix or appeal the one you have.

When is it worth getting help?

When the profile is verified, not suspended and complete, and still doesn't show for the searches that matter after a month or two. That's a local SEO problem: categories, pages on your site, reviews and links.
