Ask how much ChatGPT ads cost and you'll find blogs saying there's no minimum next to others quoting commitments of $50,000 or more. Most of that is out of date or second-hand. This guide uses only OpenAI's own help pages, policies and announcements, and sticks to what they say. We checked them on 4 November 2026. ChatGPT ads are still in beta and change month to month, so check the linked pages before you spend.

The short answer
  • ChatGPT ads are open to self-serve advertisers in 89 countries, including the US and the UK, through a beta Ads Manager.
  • The minimum daily campaign budget is $25 in the US or £15 in the UK. OpenAI states no minimum commitment.
  • You pay per impression or per click in an auction, never per conversion. OpenAI suggests starting bids of $3 to $5 a click.
  • Ads reach people on the Free and Go plans only, and stay away from health, mental health and politics.
  • Ads don't get you into ChatGPT's answers. That's a separate job, called GEO.

Where ChatGPT ads run, and who sees them

OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026, launched in the UK by August, and on 21 October expanded to 89 countries. Businesses can now buy them through a self-serve Ads Manager, still labelled beta, as long as the legal entity that advertises and pays is based in a country where it's available. OpenAI says some new self-serve accounts can only advertise in their home country until identity checks and a first spend threshold are met.

The audience is narrower than ChatGPT's user count suggests. OpenAI says ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't see them. It doesn't show ads to accounts it identifies as under 18, in Temporary Chats, or near sensitive topics including personal health, mental health and politics.

OpenAI help pages, read 4 November 2026 from archived copies dated October 2026. Billing is after delivery, with a card charged at a set threshold.

For context, LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the average search ad click at $5.42 and the average Facebook traffic click at $0.60. OpenAI's suggested starting bid sits closer to search than to Facebook, but with no published conversion data, nobody can yet say what a ChatGPT lead costs. A month at the US minimum of $25 a day is about $760, which is the realistic size of a first test. Our guide to setting a small business marketing budget shows how to size a test against the leads you need.

How the ads look

OpenAI says ads appear below ChatGPT responses as one unit with your name, logo, headline, description, image and link, labelled as sponsored and separated from the answer. Online stores can also run ads from a product feed, showing images, prices and ratings. OpenAI is testing other formats, including ads during image generation and chat-style "sponsored agents", with a small number of advertisers only.

The important line is what ads don't do. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, that ads run on separate systems, and that advertisers can't shape, rank or alter its responses. Product results in ChatGPT shopping are not ads, and products uploaded for ads won't appear in ordinary conversations. So an ad buys a spot under the answer, not a mention in it. Getting named in the answer is AI visibility work, or GEO, and our checklist for getting recommended by AI search covers it.

Targeting and your data

What you can and can't choose
  • Location. Countries, and where available regions, cities, markets and postal codes.
  • Devices. Apps or web on Android, iPhone and desktop.
  • Customer lists. Emails or phone numbers. Targeting a list needs at least 25,000 matched people, more than most small businesses hold.
  • Context hints. Plain descriptions of the conversations you'd like to appear near. OpenAI says they aren't exact-match keywords.
  • Not available. Keyword, age, gender or interest targeting, none of which appears in OpenAI's targeting documentation.

Advertisers get aggregated results such as views and clicks. OpenAI says it doesn't share conversations with advertisers or sell user data. To measure results, you send conversions with the OpenAI Pixel, its Conversions API, or both, and you can add UTM tags to see ChatGPT traffic in your own analytics. Reporting is last-touch, with 7, 14 or 30-day click windows, and OpenAI notes that conversion totals may include modelled conversions.

Who can't advertise yet

OpenAI's ad policies say the early focus is household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education. Several categories are disallowed for now, including dating apps, alcohol, vaping, gambling, cannabis, political ads, individual job listings, property rentals or sales, and wellness services such as health coaching. Regulated services depend on the country: financial and health services outside the US are generally prohibited, legal services outside the US are prohibited, and telehealth isn't allowed anywhere. In the US, approved advertisers in those fields may need to show proof of licensure. A UK clinic, law firm or financial adviser can't advertise on ChatGPT at all today.

Should a small business try it?

Worth a small test if
  • You're in one of OpenAI's focus categories, such as local services, consumer goods, travel or education.
  • Google and Facebook already bring you customers at a cost you know, so you have something to compare against.
  • You can track conversions properly and can spare about a month at the minimum budget without needing it to pay back.
Wait if
  • You're a UK health, finance or legal business, or in a disallowed category.
  • Your proven channels aren't working yet. Fix Google or Facebook first; they have years of benchmarks behind them.
  • You need predictable lead volume this quarter. With no published benchmarks, a test is a test.

If you do test, keep it simple: one campaign, a click bid in OpenAI's suggested range, the pixel and UTM tags in place, and a landing page built for the people who'll arrive. After four weeks, compare cost per lead and per customer with your Google and Facebook numbers, not clicks with clicks. We have no ChatGPT ads results of our own to publish yet; when we do, we'll add them here.

Questions people ask

Can small businesses advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes, in the countries where OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager is open, which include the US and the UK. It's still a beta, and some new accounts can only advertise in their home country at first.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

Prices are set in an auction, and you pay per thousand impressions or per click, never per conversion. OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 a click, and the minimum daily campaign budget is $25 in the US or £15 in the UK. OpenAI says it has no performance benchmarks yet.

Is there a $50,000 minimum for ChatGPT ads?

Not according to OpenAI. None of its help pages or policies mentions a minimum commitment; the only floor it states is the minimum daily budget. Large figures quoted elsewhere refer to the early pilot and don't appear on OpenAI's pages.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

People on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't see ads, and OpenAI says it doesn't show ads to users it identifies as under 18 or next to conversations about personal health, mental health or politics.

Do ChatGPT ads change ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no: ads run on separate systems, appear below the answer, are labelled as sponsored, and advertisers can't shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses.

Can I target keywords with ChatGPT ads?

No. You can add context hints, but OpenAI says they aren't exact-match keywords. Targeting is by location, device and optional customer lists, which need at least 25,000 matched people.

Can UK clinics, law firms or financial advisers advertise on ChatGPT?

Not at the moment. OpenAI's policy says financial and health services outside the US are generally prohibited, and legal services outside the US are currently prohibited. Telehealth isn't allowed anywhere.

Should I buy ChatGPT ads or work on GEO?

They do different jobs. An ad buys a labelled spot below ChatGPT's answer. GEO is about being named in the answer itself, which OpenAI says advertisers can't pay for. If your business isn't mentioned when people ask ChatGPT about your service, ads won't fix that.
