Most owners who ask whether Google Ads work have either tried them and seen clicks that never turned into customers, or heard a story like that from someone who did. The honest answer is that Google Ads work very well for some businesses and poorly for others, and you can tell which group you're in with two numbers, before spending anything.
- Google Ads work when people search for what you sell, and a customer is worth clearly more than it costs to win one.
- Your ceiling per lead is what a new customer is worth multiplied by the share of leads you close.
- Search leads averaged $66.69 across industries in LocalIQ's 2026 benchmarks, from about $27 to $132 depending on the industry.
- Leads often start within days. Judge the account after about three months, on cost per customer.
- Most accounts that 'don't work' are running Google's defaults: broad match, search partners and the wrong location setting.
The two-minute test
You need two numbers: what a new customer is worth to you in gross profit over their first year, and what share of enquiries usually becomes a customer. Multiply them, and you have the most you can pay for a lead and still break even. Then compare it with what a search lead costs in your industry.
| Business | Most you can pay per lead | Industry average cost per lead | Gross profit from a new customer | Enquiries that buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dental practice | $300 | $72.97 | $1,200 | 1 in 4 |
| Home improvement | $400 | $90.92 | $2,000 | 1 in 5 |
| Law firm | $1,250 | $131.63 | $5,000 | 1 in 4 |
Customer values and close rates are illustrative. Industry averages: LocalIQ search advertising benchmarks, 2026.
Run it with your own numbers. If your ceiling sits well above your industry's average, Google Ads have room to pay, even while you're still testing. If it sits below, they'll struggle however well they're run, and the offer, the price or the follow-up needs work first.
When Google Ads usually work
- People search for what you sell when they need it: repairs, legal help, dental treatment, B2B services, specialist products.
- There's enough search volume in the area you serve. A tiny town with a handful of searches a month won't feed a campaign.
- A customer is worth hundreds of dollars or more, enough to carry clicks that cost $5 to $10 in many service industries.
- Someone can answer the phone and the forms during the hours the ads run.
- You have a landing page that matches what people searched for, not just a homepage.
When they usually don't
- Nobody searches for it yet. A new kind of product or service has to be shown to people first, which is a job for Facebook and Instagram.
- The sale is small and one-off, so a customer is worth less than a few clicks cost.
- There's no conversion tracking, so nobody can tell which searches bring customers.
- The account runs on Google's defaults. Broad match is the default match type, search partners are included by default, and the default location option includes people merely interested in your area.
- Auto-applied recommendations are switched on, which Google says can add broad match keywords, search partners and Display expansion on its own.
If you've run Google Ads before and got clicks without customers, start with why Google Ads clicks don't convert. It's usually tracking, search terms or the landing page, in that order.
How long until Google Ads work?
Faster than most channels. Because people are already searching, leads often start within days of launch. Google says a bid strategy's learning period never lasts more than 7 days, with performance settling over one or two conversion cycles, and it recommends periods with at least 30 conversions before relying on automated bidding.
In our accounts, first leads often arrive within 7-10 days of a relaunch, cost per lead is reliable by about day 30, and scaling decisions come around day 60. Judge the whole thing after about three months, on cost per customer rather than clicks.
Google Ads or Facebook ads?
Google catches demand that already exists: someone typing what you sell, ready to act. Facebook and Instagram create demand, by showing an offer to people who weren't looking. If your customers search when they need you, start with Google. If they buy when reminded, start with Facebook, and are Facebook ads worth it has the same two-minute test for that side. Many small businesses end up running both.
Is a Google Ads agency worth it?
A management fee comes on top of the ad spend and raises the return the ads need to make. On a budget of a few hundred dollars a month, learning the basics yourself often makes more sense. Once the ads show they can pay back, a specialist usually earns the fee by cutting wasted searches every week and scaling what works. Google Ads agency pricing covers what the market charges, how to choose a Google Ads agency covers what to ask, and we charge $500-$2,000 a month, month-to-month.
How to tell if it's working
Track three numbers each month: cost per lead, the share of leads that become customers, and cost per customer. The last one is the number to judge against your ceiling. Then read the search terms report every week: it shows what people actually typed before they clicked, and it's where most wasted spend shows up first.
Questions people ask
Do Google Ads work for small businesses?
They do when people search for what you sell and a new customer is worth clearly more than it costs to win one. Work out the most you can pay per lead from your customer value and close rate, compare it with what search leads cost in your industry, and you'll know before you spend whether the numbers can work.
How much does a Google Ads lead cost?
LocalIQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks put the average at $66.69 across industries, from about $27 in arts and entertainment to $131.63 for attorneys. Dentists averaged $72.97 and home improvement $90.92. Your own cost depends on your area, your competition and how well the landing page converts.

On a budget of a few hundred dollars a month, often not: the fee can be bigger than the ad spend. Once the ads have shown they can pay back, a specialist usually earns the fee by cutting wasted searches and scaling what works. We charge $500-$2,000 a month, month-to-month.
Are Google Ads better than Facebook ads?
They do different jobs. Google reaches people already searching, so it suits urgent and considered purchases like repairs, legal help and dental treatment. Facebook and Instagram reach people who weren't looking yet, which suits offers people buy when reminded. Many small businesses end up running both.
When shouldn't a small business run Google Ads?
When almost nobody searches for what you sell, when a customer is worth less than a few clicks cost in your industry, or when nobody can answer the calls and forms the ads bring in. We'd rather say that on a call than take the budget.
