If you've created a Sales or Leads campaign on Facebook lately, you've already used Meta Advantage+. Meta now starts these campaigns in its Advantage+ setup by default, with a little Advantage+ on label at the top. That leaves small business owners with a fair question: should you leave it on? Here's what Advantage+ actually switches on, what Meta claims for it, what independent data says, and where we'd keep it on or rein it in.
- Advantage+ is the default for new Sales, Leads and App campaigns. It's on when campaign budget, audience and placements are all left broad.
- Meta's own tests report lower costs, such as 14% lower cost per lead for Advantage+ leads campaigns.
- Independent tests by Haus found 58% of brands did better with manual campaigns head to head, but those were large advertisers.
- For most small businesses: keep it on to find new customers, set location and age controls, and keep retargeting separate.
- Feed it real results, not cheap form fills, and check the creative changes Meta switches on for you.
What Advantage+ switches on
Advantage+ isn't one feature. A campaign shows Advantage+ on when three settings are left to Meta: campaign budget, audience and placements. Narrow any one of them too far and that section shows Advantage+ off, and the campaign as a whole no longer counts as Advantage+. Controls set at ad account level, such as a minimum age for your business, don't switch it off.
| Setting | What turns Advantage+ off | What you still control |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign budget | Several ad sets, each with its own ad set budget | Spending limits on individual ad sets |
| Audience | Hard limits on age, gender, interests or included custom audiences | Locations, a minimum age up to 25, custom audience exclusions and languages |
| Placements | Excluding placements in an ad set, or leaving out mobile or desktop | Account-level exclusions, such as Audience Network or Facebook's right column |

Meta is also rolling out a change that removes manual placement choices from Sales, Leads and App campaigns altogether, leaving account-level exclusions. Whether you have it yet depends on your account.

These are Meta's numbers about Meta's product, measured by Meta. They're averages across advertisers of every size, and they compare against campaigns Meta calls business as usual. They're a reason to test Advantage+, not proof it will win in your account.
What independent data says
The largest independent comparison we could find is from Haus, a company that sells incrementality testing, published in July 2025. Across 640 Meta experiments, 58% of brands saw a higher incremental return from manual campaigns than from Advantage+ in head-to-head tests, and 42% saw the reverse. On average, Advantage+ drove a 12% lower incremental return at 18% lower daily spend.
Two caveats matter for a small business. The average advertiser in that study spent $14 million a year on Meta, and the tests ran from 2024 to mid-2025, mostly before Meta's current Advantage+ setup. So the honest summary is that Advantage+ wins in some accounts and loses in others, and the only way to know about yours is to test it.
Where we'd keep it on
- Finding new customers. Prospecting campaigns, where reaching people you wouldn't have picked is the point.
- Accounts that report real results. Purchases or qualified leads sent back through the Conversions API or a CRM connection, so Meta learns who became a customer.
- Plenty of creative. Meta's own best practice for Advantage+ sales is a wide variety of creative, and broad delivery needs several ads to choose from.
Where we'd rein it in
- You're retargeting. Meta says Advantage+ audience isn't recommended for retargeting campaigns.
- You serve a fixed area. Set locations as a control. Meta won't deliver outside them unless you ask it to reach more people.
- Existing customers would soak up spend. The existing customer budget cap is gone. Meta's workaround is an exclusion, or two ad sets with a spending limit on one.
- You sell age-restricted products. Use the minimum age control or account controls, which don't switch Advantage+ off.
- The goal is the wrong one. Advantage+ will find more of whatever you optimize for. If that's cheap form fills, you'll get cheap form fills. Fix the event before blaming the automation.
The budget math for small accounts
Meta says an ad set leaves the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit, and that budget changes, new ads and targeting changes can reset that learning. At LocalIQ's 2026 average Facebook cost per lead of $27.39, 50 leads a week costs about $1,370. Most small accounts don't spend that per ad set, which is why splitting a small budget across many ad sets usually hurts. Fewer ad sets, under one campaign budget, give Meta more to learn from. If your ad sets keep showing learning limited, that's the first place to look.
Two more things worth knowing. Meta says Advantage+ campaign budget is best suited to campaigns with at least two ad sets. And Meta may spend up to 75% over your daily budget on some days and less on others, but no more than seven times the daily budget in a week. For setting the budget itself, see how much to spend on Facebook ads.
Check what it does to your ads
Advantage+ creative is a separate set of switches. Meta's creative enhancements can crop and expand images, animate them, add music, change your call to action, rewrite text overlays and generate up to five variations of your primary text and headline. Meta says some enhancements may be turned on by default, and it names a few for single image and video ads, such as reveal details over time, spotlights and summaries.
Before you publish, open Review defaults in Ads Manager and turn off anything that doesn't fit. If your ads have to follow rules, such as health, housing or financial ads, check every enhancement that rewrites text, because the rewritten version is still your ad.
Housing, credit and job ads
Meta's help pages disagree here. Some say special ad category campaigns for housing, employment and financial products don't get Advantage+ audience. Meta's July 2026 developer update switched it on by default for those categories when the audience isn't narrowed. Check what your own Ads Manager shows. Either way, the category's targeting limits still apply: no age or ZIP code targeting and no lookalikes, as covered in our guide to real estate ads under the housing rules.
How we test it
For a small account, we start with Advantage+ on for prospecting, with location and minimum age set as controls, existing customers excluded, and as few ad sets as the budget can feed. Then we test it against a manual setup with a proper A/B test, which Meta itself recommends for Advantage+ audience, and judge both on cost per customer from your own records, not on the numbers in Ads Manager alone. That's the same approach behind our Meta ads management for local businesses and ecommerce brands, at $500-$2,000 a month.
Questions people ask
What is Meta Advantage+?
Meta's name for its automated campaign setup. A Sales, Leads or App campaign is Advantage+ when it uses Advantage+ campaign budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements together, so Meta decides how to split the budget, who sees the ads and where they appear.
Is Advantage+ on by default?
For new Sales, Leads and App campaigns, yes. Meta now starts these in the Advantage+ setup and shows Advantage+ on at the top of the campaign. Awareness, Traffic and Engagement campaigns work differently.
Does Advantage+ work for small businesses?
Often, but not always. Meta's own tests report lower costs per result, while an independent study of 640 tests found 58% of brands did better with manual campaigns head to head. Those were large advertisers. For a small account, the deciding factor is usually whether Meta is being told about real customers, not the setting itself.
How do I turn Advantage+ off?
Narrow the budget, audience or placements: separate ad set budgets on several ad sets, hard audience limits instead of suggestions, or excluded placements. Meta then shows Advantage+ off. Ad account controls, such as a minimum age or blocked locations, don't turn it off.
Can I still target by location and age with Advantage+?
Yes. Locations, a minimum age, custom audience exclusions and languages are controls Meta won't go beyond. You can raise the minimum age up to 25 and keep Advantage+ on. Age, gender, interests and custom audiences to include become suggestions Meta may go past.
Should I use Advantage+ for retargeting?
Meta says Advantage+ audience isn't recommended for retargeting, because it reaches beyond the people you name. Keep retargeting campaigns small and specific, and use Advantage+ for finding new customers.
Does Advantage+ change my ads?
It can. Advantage+ creative enhancements can crop or expand images, add music or animation, rewrite text overlays and generate up to five variations of your primary text and headline. Some may be switched on by default, so check Review defaults before publishing and turn off any that don't fit.
What happened to the existing customer budget cap?
Meta removed it. To keep spend off existing customers, exclude them with a custom audience. To cap it, Meta suggests two ad sets: one for existing customers with a spending limit, one that excludes them.
Can housing or financial ads use Advantage+?
It depends on your account. Some of Meta's help pages say special ad category campaigns don't get Advantage+ audience, while Meta's July 2026 developer update switched it on by default for relaxed housing, employment and financial setups. The category's own targeting limits apply either way.
