Most independent hotels don't need more people looking. They need the guests who already know them to book direct, and the travelers comparing prices on Google to finish on the hotel's own site rather than an OTA's. That's the job of a digital marketing agency for hotels, and how we approach it: Google hotel search, Facebook and Instagram ads, tracking through your booking engine and email to past guests, judged on direct bookings and direct revenue.

The short version
  • For independent hotels, small groups, B&Bs, inns and boutique stays, in the US and UK.
  • Google first: your Business Profile, free booking links and hotel ads, where guests compare prices before they book.
  • Facebook and Instagram ads for the dates you need to fill, and for people who looked at rooms but didn't book.
  • Tracking through your booking engine, so every direct booking and its value reaches Google and Meta.
  • Monthly services run $500-$2,000 a month, month-to-month. Website builds run $1,200-$15,000.

Why hotel marketing stalls

What you see, and what's behind it
  • Full in season, quiet midweek and off-season. Marketing switched on when rooms sell themselves, and off when they don't.
  • Most bookings arrive through OTAs. A booking engine that's hard to find, slow on a phone, or no cheaper than the OTA listed beside it on Google.
  • Ads with plenty of clicks and no bookings. Campaigns optimized for traffic, because the booking engine never tells Meta or Google a booking happened.
  • Guests who stayed once and never came back. No email list, or a list nobody writes to.

Direct bookings vs OTA commission

OTAs earn their commission when they find a guest you'd never have reached. They cost the most when they take a cut of a guest who already knew your name: a returning guest, or someone who searched for your hotel by name. Your rate is in your contract. Multiply it by last year's OTA revenue and you have a marketing budget you already spend, without deciding where it goes.

The aim isn't to leave the OTAs. It's to make your own site the easier place to book for guests who'd come anyway. Check your OTA contracts for rate parity terms before advertising a lower direct price; a perk such as breakfast or a later checkout can do the job instead.

Google hotel search, in plain English

Where guests compare you on Google
  • Your Business Profile. Photos, amenities, reviews and your replies, in Search and Maps.
  • Free booking links. Booking links in Google's hotel results that cost nothing per click and rank on usefulness to the traveler; nobody can pay to rank higher. Your booking engine may already be connected and able to switch them on.
  • Hotel ads. Paid placements in the same results. Performance Max for travel goals is Google's campaign type built to drive direct hotel bookings across its channels.
  • Search ads on your name. When other booking sites bid on it, a small brand campaign keeps your own site on top.

Tracking through a third-party booking engine

Many small hotels take bookings on a separate booking engine, often on another domain. That's where tracking breaks: the guest books somewhere Meta and Google can't see, the ads get credit for nothing, and campaigns end up optimized for clicks. Three things fix it:

Before any budget goes in
  • One journey, two domains. Cross-domain measurement in Google Analytics, so a visit to your site and a booking on the engine count as one guest.
  • A purchase event with a value. Fired by the booking engine on its own confirmation page. Meta's hotel ads go further and ask for search, view, checkout and purchase events, ideally with check-in and check-out dates.
  • A test booking. One real booking, checked in Events Manager and Google Ads. How to track bookings covers the routes when the engine won't cooperate.

One rule hotels can skip: Meta lists hotels, resorts and retreats outside its housing ad category, so the targeting limits that real estate ads face don't apply. Vacation rentals and serviced apartments can be different, because temporary housing listings are inside it.

What our agency does for hotels

Pick by the problem
  • Google Ads. Travelers search for a stay in your town and book with whoever shows a price first.
  • Facebook and Instagram ads. You need to fill particular dates: midweek, off-season, events and occasions.
  • Local SEO. Your Business Profile and reviews should win the "hotels in" searches you can rank for.
  • Website design. Your site is slow on a phone, or the Book button is hard to find.
  • Email and automation. Past guests never hear from you after checkout.
  • AI search visibility. Travelers ask ChatGPT where to stay nearby, and your hotel isn't in the answer.

Restaurant open to non-residents? Marketing for restaurants covers reviews, reservations and ordering.

How direct bookings fit together

1

Be found where guests compare

A complete Business Profile, free booking links switched on, and hotel or search ads where the numbers justify them.

2

A website that sells the stay

Rooms, real photos, the price and a Book button on every screen.

3

A booking engine that reports back

Booking value, cross-domain measurement and a test booking, before any ad spends.

4

Ads for the dates you need

Facebook and Instagram ads for events and quiet weeks, plus reminders to people who checked dates and left.

5

A reason to book direct

A perk or a flexible cancellation, stated on your site and in your ads.

6

Email to past guests

In the US, CAN-SPAM needs a working opt-out, honored within 10 business days, and your postal address. In the UK, the ICO's guidance allows email about similar stays if guests could opt out when you took their details and in every message; it's under review, so check it. Not legal advice.

7

One weekly report

Direct bookings, direct revenue and cost per direct booking, by channel.

Proof: a booking-led account

We haven't published hotel client work. The closest published account is a local, booking-led leisure business: an independent climbing and activity center in South East England whose customers book and pay on its own website, much like a hotel's direct booking engine.

From the climbing center's account
  • It had been running on a link click objective, with no purchase event reaching Meta, so the ads had never seen a sale.
  • Cost per booking started at £28.82 and reached £5.13 once purchase tracking and a sales objective were in place, on essentially the same budget.
  • Over ten months, the account returned 2.95x its ad spend in tracked revenue.

A climbing center isn't a hotel, and these figures aren't a forecast for yours. What carries over is the order of work: tracking first, then the objective, then the creative. Read the full case study.

Who we're not for

Not the right fit
  • Hotels that want more followers rather than more bookings.
  • Properties that won't fix a booking engine guests can't use on a phone.
  • Budgets that can't cover real ad spend alongside a management fee.

Guides for hoteliers

Questions hoteliers ask a marketing agency

What does a digital marketing agency for hotels do?

It brings guests to your own website and booking engine instead of an OTA: Google hotel search and ads, Facebook and Instagram ads for the dates you need to fill, and email to past guests. It should report direct bookings and revenue, not reach.

How can a small hotel get more direct bookings?

Be visible where guests compare prices on Google, make the Book button easy to find on a phone, give a reason to book direct, and email past guests before they search again.

Are Google's free booking links really free?

Google says hotel partners pay no fee for them and nothing per click, and nobody can pay to rank higher. If your booking engine already connects to Google, your provider may be able to switch them on.

Should a hotel use Google Ads or Facebook ads?

Google first, because people searching for a stay in your area are close to booking. Facebook and Instagram ads fill particular dates and remind people who looked at rooms but didn't book.

How do I track bookings made on a third-party booking engine?

Set up cross-domain measurement in Google Analytics, have the booking engine fire a purchase event with the booking value on its confirmation page, and make a test booking before any budget goes in.

Can we email past guests?

Usually. In the US, every marketing email needs a working opt-out and your postal address. In the UK, past guests can get emails about similar stays if they could opt out when you took their details and in every message. This isn't legal advice.

Do Facebook's housing ad rules apply to hotels?

No. Meta lists hotels, resorts and retreats outside its housing category. Temporary housing listings are inside it, so vacation rentals and serviced apartments may need the category.

How much does hotel marketing cost?

With us, ads or SEO management runs $500-$2,000 a month, month-to-month, with ad spend paid straight to Google or Meta. Website builds are fixed-price and run $1,200-$15,000.
